Spotlight Designer! Kristina S.!

Q&A with Kristina!

Tell us about yourself:

I’m an illustrator/ designer with an obsession with strange critters (especially axolotls). I am always creating and making and I truly have a passion for it. Better yet, one of the most rewarding things about being a designer and artist is it allows me to connect with other creatives (and also those who may not be as design savvy) and help bring to life their vision through offering things like files and pre-made designs they can use to grow their own business and/or hobby.

What 3 words would you use to describe yourself?

Quirky, weird and creative would be my three words!

What is your favorite type of material to work with and why?

I love matte acrylic (and printed acrylic), but I am also a huge fan of maple wood too! I like working with acrylic as I find it gives a fun and colorful look to my projects that I often cannot get with wood, unless I hand paint. I do love working with wood too though- but I have a special spot for acrylic.

What is a project you are proud of and why (provide a picture if possible)?

Honestly, I am going to go with this sign I just did in the photo above! Sign making is not really my forte as most of my projects have been small scale items like jewelry, keychains and ornaments. When I posted that photo in some of my groups, so many people expressed interest and it really made me feel great! Especially going outside of my comfort zone and trying new things. It made me want to try and invest more time to making larger scaled products like signs and general décor (if only I had more space to put it all haha).

What inspired this file?

My two axolotls! For years, it was always hard finding axolotl things like décor, plushies and products in general. While they are gaining more popularity in recent days, it’s always been a passion of mine drawing and making axolotl related things.

What do you do to get in the zone for crafting?

I wake up, have my coffee, start up the air compressor and then venture downstairs to my woodshop to set up and work. Most of my creating occurs from the morning until evening. I then usually tend to answer emails and perform other tasks from 5pm onwards. I know, it probably sounds like I don’t have much of a life. My hobbies have become my business now, and I honestly love doing this every day. I wake up excited to make projects, help community members and communicate with all kinds of people from all over the globe!

Who inspires you and why?

There are so many creators and makers out there, it is so hard to choose because I have so many! If I had to choose one though, it would be my online laser friend and business owner, Regina- who is the owner of SpeaksofComfort. I’ve known her for awhile now and she’s been a huge help and inspiration to me.

When I started file selling last year and was very new to owning a laser, she actually took the time to help me out, test some of my files and explain how I should set up things to make them easier for my customers. She has provided guidance and help many times over, has helped me test a bunch of my files before release, and I really appreciate it! She also is a fantastic designer and maker too!

What is your favorite thing to do outside of crafting?

I enjoy playing with my goldendoodle pup Daisy and drawing/ illustrating. Once a month, I like to spend a week with my boyfriend who lives a state away. I use that week to prep and plan out upcoming projects (and design)- and take work with me. I also enjoy playing video games from time to time when I am winding down towards the evening as well.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

As I try to be an active member of the Craft Closet community, as I mentioned above- I do love helping people. If you have any specific file ideas you would like to see or even custom pattern designs you would be interested in having on COLORboards, please feel free to message me or tag me! Same goes for any kinds of DIY or tutorials you may be interested in.
