Spotlight Designer! Laura G.!

Q&A With Laura!

Tell us something interesting about yourself: I've been drawing since I was a kid and was told that I couldn't make any money in art, but that I have a great brain for engineering. Well, I didn't do either and went to work in retail and then to the corporate side of it. Fast forward more than a couple decades of not doing art and I hear about how I can put my art into a Cricut and cut out paper and vinyl. I start drawing again, mostly dogs and putting them on shirts. Then during my furlough due to Covid, I decided to purchase a Glowforge. With it, my art and engineering brain united. I can create so many things with the Glowforge, almost anything that I can think of. It's so amazing to work out the details to make things go together, to make things move correctly. I am able to build practical things or artsy things or anything in between. And now I've been accepted into the Glowforge Catalog Designer program and I feel like I haven't even really begun yet. The possibilities are endless.
What 3 words would you use to describe yourself? Introverted, loyal, smart
What is your favorite type of material to work with and why? I like different species of woods and how their colors pop with a little bit of finish. It makes a project feel more valuable.
What is a project you are proud of and why? I drew this layered tiger last year while I was on furlough from my regular job to cut out of card stock on my Cricut machine. it wasn’t my first design like that, but I feel it’s my best. I wanted to reimagine it for a project on the Glowforge and changed it from a full face to a little more than half so i could maximize a full sheet. I love the natural wood look so only added a touch of color to the tongue and a black wash to walnut to the darkest layer.

What inspired this file? Mandalas (zentangles) were huge in the Cricut community and everyone was talking about Joe exotic and his show on Netflix. I love animals so decided to try a tiger.
What do you do to get in the zone for crafting? Anything can trigger an idea. And sometimes the mood isn’t right, but I’ve always got a list of ideas I can work on. Sometime I forget the list if something else inspires me.
Who inspires you and why? This is kind of strange for a craft page, but a Skateboarder named Rodney Mullen. He invented a ton of tricks that had never been done before and the history of skateboarding changed because of it. And he is an introvert who managed to keep true to himself despite the fame it brought him.
What is your favorite thing to do outside of crafting? Playing with my 3 dogs
Is there anything else you would like to share with us? I say try to make time to do the things that bring you happiness. Art/Creating is mine.
