How to Make Your Own Soap or Cookie Stamp with a Laser Cutter

Looking for a fun and creative project that combines crafting and baking? Making your own soap or cookie stamp is a fantastic way to personalize your creations! With just a little bit of design work and a laser cutter, you can craft a custom stamp that adds a professional touch to your soaps or cookies. Here's a step-by-step guide to walk you through the process.

 Step 1: Create Your Design

Start by designing your stamp. You can use design software like Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, or another vector-based tool.

  • Outline all cut lines: Use stroke (not fill) or a different color with no fill to distinguish them.

  • Design with assembly in mind: When your design is cut, it will be in several pieces that you'll glue onto a backing piece. Visualize how it will come together once assembled.

Step 2: Create a Backing Shape

Design a solid backing shape that all the other pieces will be glued onto. This backing provides the foundation for your stamp.

  • Optional tip: Lightly score the design onto the backing piece. This makes it easier to place everything correctly later.

Step 3: Reverse Your Design Before Cutting

To ensure your stamp prints correctly, you must mirror (reverse) the design before cutting.

  • Pro tip: After cutting, apply masking tape to hold the pieces in place as they come off the laser bed. This keeps everything aligned and organized.

Step 4: Add a Handle (Optional)

If you want a more ergonomic tool, you can design and cut a simple handle to glue onto the backing. This is particularly helpful if you're stamping multiple items.

Step 5: Export and Cut

Save your design as an SVG file and upload it to your laser cutting software. Use your laser cutter to precisely cut out the components of your stamp.

Step 6: Assemble Your Stamp

Glue the cut-out pieces onto the backing piece. Be sure to glue them in reverse, just like your mirrored design, so the final stamp prints the correct (unreversed) image.
