Step 1: Start with Your Design
Let’s begin at the very beginning: the design!
A Quick Note on Design Differences
Wax seal stamps are different from traditional rubber stamps. With wax stamps, you want a deep engrave of the design you want to appear in the wax.
In contrast, rubber stamps require the area around the design to be engraved—so it’s the opposite technique!
Design Tips for Better Impressions
While traditional wax stamps are typically round or oval, feel free to get creative with shapes! Here are a few things we learned during our trial runs:
-
Thicker lines and bold fonts work best.
-
Engraving a border around your design helps define the seal shape and makes it easier to remove the stamp from the wax.
-
Keep the edges smooth—this prevents the wax from sticking.
Materials & Settings
You can use any color acrylic for your stamp. Here’s what worked well for us with a Glowforge Basic and 1/8” acrylic:
-
Engrave: Speed 545, Full Power, 270 LPI
-
Cut: Use the Medium Black Acrylic preset — Speed 150, Full Power
Make the Handle
Don’t forget the handle! To assemble, simply attach the handle to the engraved stamp using acrylic adhesive. We used Weld-On, but any strong acrylic glue will do.
Choosing Your Wax
You can find wax seal supplies easily online—Amazon has a great selection. There are two main types to choose from:
-
Wax sticks
-
Wax beads or pieces
Either works—just be sure not to overheat your wax!
Making the Perfect Wax Seal
After plenty of practice (and a few flops—we’ve all been there), here’s the method that worked best for us:
-
Melt the wax just enough—it shouldn't be bubbling hot.
-
Pour it onto the spot where you want your seal.
-
Wait 10–20 seconds until the edges begin to firm up.
-
Press the stamp in and let it sit until the wax cools completely. It will look slightly dull.
-
Wiggle and lift the stamp out gently.
Pro tip: If the wax sticks, don’t panic—just drip more wax and stamp again.
Want to add extra flair? Try embedding ribbons, dried flowers, or confetti before pouring the wax!
